Mitutoyo digital micrometers are used to measure dimensions. They have been around since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. Early instruments measured within a few hundredths of an inch. Today, they are much more accurate and can be used to measure all dimensions of an object. An ordinary micrometer displays a readout with divisions of .001 inch and is highly accurate with a tolerance of +/- .0001 inch.   

There are different types of micrometers depending on the type of measurement one needs to take. The user then turns the instrument on and if the digital readout is 0 the device is properly calibrated and can now be used to achieve a relatively accurate measurement. The user must make sure to never touch the measuring probes of the instrument because skin oils and sweat can cause an inaccurate measurement.   

With the ever increasing need for great accuracy, mechanical devices fall short.  More precise measurement of technology such as optical fiber requires precise measurement of optical waves.
